Primal

Is my sentence correct?

-There is something very (here the adjective primal is not before a noun) primal within us.

My teacher said it was wrong. But sometimes I see the adjective used in this way.

Some people who are fussy about language discourage the use of very in front of words like unique, classic and primal. The logic is that words which imply the ultimate should never be modified by very or, even worse, carry the suffix -er or -est.
