Hola. Me llamo Kate. Tengo 18 años. Soy de los Estados Unidos y vengo aqui para mejorar escribir en español. Tengo que prepararme para una clase de composición. Espero que puedan ayudarme, he mirado este foro y me parece muy útil.

The addition of the article is necessary, if you want to keep the same wording. A more concise way to write the same idea would be:
... para mejorar la escritura.
