Abra and Doxology
A student who comes to the book club I run in my school asked me a question about East of Eden that I could not answer: Do you know why Steinbeck chose the names Abra and Doxology (Samuel Hamilton's horse)? Suggestions welcome.

Doxa means knowledge in Greek...doxology would translate into epistemology, if such word exists...no clue on Abra, guess from Abraham

Thanks so much. The horse's name makes total sense. I'm not so sure about Abra but you might be right, as there is so much from the Bible in East of Eden...Thanks.

Abra is a biblical female name meaning "father of many". King Solomon's favorite girl in his household was named Abra. I think, like hopper, it's a reference to Abraham, bacause it's the feminime version of Abraham.
