Neither should point the finger at the other. There wasn't a standard in the early 18th century, but a British standard must have been used in 1769, when the KJV Bible (1611) underwent a 'modernization'. There were 24,000 documented changes, mostly spelling updates, made at that time. Just for giggles, I looked at the KJV Bible to see which spelling (spilled or spilt) survived the modernization. To my surprise, both are found therein. So, even though a spelling standard existed, both spellings were allowed. Guess which one is predominant. It's spilled. |

Oh, Rusty - can't you just let me pick on my British friends and have some fun?

Just it's very interesting because I always have thought that the language British and your are very different although are the same idiom named English. But they have different spellings and with different pronunciations.
Congratulation for your investigation. You must look after much your language. I do.
