Hacer agua

Hacer agua
I think it means in trouble - springing a leak and it could be used figuratively, but I'm not sure. Can someone confirm this, or give me
a sentence with it?

I have heard it only when a boat has a hole and is going to sink, then the crew has to try to "achicar" so that the boat does not sink. I do not recall the correct terms in English at this moment.

This is correct. These days, the word has taken on a more metaphorical meaning as well: when some bank has gone bankrupt, the state has to bail it out which means effectively to stop it sinking.

It means to take in water, to founder:

la teoría hace agua por todos lados
the theory doesn't hold water at all
the theory has a lot of flaws

Right. Thanks I couldn't think of the term.

And now that I see Perikles answer I did not know what "hacer agua" was in English.

Now, like I said before I have only heard it to mean that a boat or any floating vessel is "leaking" and is in danger of sinking.

To me sounds wrong "tu teoría hace agua", a menos que ahora se esté usando. Pero sería un anglicismo. lo cual no es raro en todo caso. :-)

It's a common saying here, though I've always heard it in plural: "hace aguas":

hacer ~s. 1. loc. verb. orinar (‖ expeler la orina).
2. loc. verb. hacer agua (‖ presentar debilidad).


hacer ~. 1. loc. verb. Mar. hacer aguada.
2. loc. verb. Mar. Dicho de un buque: Ser invadido por ella a través de alguna grieta o abertura.
3. loc. verb. Dicho especialmente de un proyecto: Presentar debilidad o síntomas de ir a fracasar.

Ah, me acabo de acordar de que ahora hay un tipo chileno, que en la tele está usando el vosotros...

El tipo es nacido en Chile, ha estado en TV por años ya y al parecer desde diciembre (que me acuerde) lo he escuchado decir vosotros.

También te entiendo si dices que empieza con

Sólo conozco a uno y su apellido empieza "por" S. No voy a decir quién es Bueno, sale en un programa de la tele, pero no sé si es presentador.
