yo creo que ambas son correctas y que no hay ninguna diferencia

Tienen significados diferentes:

He visto a María en la esquina, debe de ir al médico (I guess it).
He visto a María en la esquina, debe ir al médico, hace mala cara (she must go to see a doctor).

En estos ejemplos se ve una diferencia.

Aunque intento no hacerlo, me quejo bastante. En estos días ha sido a causa del tiempo. Ha hecho frío, ha nevado y ha llovido. ¡Pero vivo en España, no en Inglaterra!

En navidades estuvieron en mi casa todos -el suegro, cuñadas, padres, sobrino. Eramos 10 en total. Menos mal que el tamaño de mi casa lo permite.

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te sorprendieron con algo grato?

...gave a present to your friend - you need to use the past tense of give, just as you did when talking about your wife and the t-shirt!

I don't remember the last time I bought a present for a friend. We don't normally buy each other presents, but I should give my best friend something for her birthday.

No, no depende de la frase, depende de la preposición:

Deber de: posibilidad, suposición.
Deber: obligación.

Sí, pintar unas partes de la pared. En este caso, que había reparado unos días antes; había tapado unas grietas.

Compré muebles hace unos meses porque hicimos unas obras en casa y ahora tengo una cocina más grande y una sala nueva. En cambio, ya no tengo garaje.
