More interesting yet... I realize that most likely both words end up coming more or less from the same origin, but evolving through different vias.
Most likely the "Campania" as the region, near Naples, gets its name from the other one meaning 'country' or 'plain'. (I am just guessing here.) The derivation I gave before (from Moliner) is also in the abridged by Corominas. Joan Corominas gives for 'campana' (bell) "abreviación de VASA CAMPANA 'recipientes de Campania', región de la cual procedía el bronce de mejor calidad". He also gives "campo/campamento/campaña [...] campesino as coming from 'CAMPUS' (llanura - plain)
