Sebadal es una palabra canaria. Se trata de un derivado en -al del canarismo seba 'alga marina'. Este derivado se usa en dos sentidos distintos: 'fondo marino cubierto de sebas' y 'zona del fondo marino entre los 10 y los 30 metros de profundidad aproximadamente, de aguas tranquilas y cubierto de plantas de aspecto filamentoso'. Es denominación que presenta usos toponímicos en algunas Islas.

El Sebadal, nombre de la zona industrial portuaria puede llamar a confusión. Frente a la común y extendida creencia de que su origen está en la palabra cebada (hay quien sostiene que antiguamente habrían habido en la zona unos almacenes —por otra parte inexistentes— de ese tipo de cereal, de donde provendría el término cebadal), debe señalarse que no es esa su procedencia.
Lo cierto es que el nombre Sebadal tiene su origen en la palabra seba; una especie de alga muy común en las costas canarias que en épocas de mar gruesa es arrancada y, posteriormente, depositada en la costa, donde llega a formar grande depósitos.
La palabra sebadal designa, pues, un lugar donde se acumula gran cantidad de seba. Como lo es el norte de la Bahía de las Isletas, lugar donde se enclava hoy el Puerto de la Luz y de Las Palmas.
Recientemente ha surgido un movimiento ciudadano que reivindica el nombre original de la zona: El Sebadal, frente al espurio de Cebadal.

Yes, work on the new port had been suspended because of environmental objections, that it would damage the sebadal in the area, sebadal being on the list of protected species.

So what do they do? They stop work, the politicians make a new list of protected species, which does not include sebadal, and today as reported here, the work will continue.....

There have been reports that a lot of politicians have been buying up plots of land around the area of the new port very cheaply, because the land is worth nothing at present. Surely not?

¡exacto! I actually think the new port would be very beneficial, but that is not what drives the politicians. How do you say 'doing the right thing for the wrong reasons' ? By the way - is the nos an ethic dative?

Yeah, I guess the "nos" is a "dativo de interés" or as you say "ethic dative".

The funny thing is that it means that they are the ones who are going to make 'a killing', (money-wise) but the 'nos' is kind of saying, 'in front of us' or 'despite of us' or 'in our faces' type of idea...
