Has anyone ever heard aceite used to mean some kind of fuel? When a large ocean-going ship stops to tomar aceite, could it possibly be a way of saying the ship stops to take on fuel? The context of my translation would indicate that's the case but I just wondered if it's a very common usage for aceite.

Never heard it used like that before.
It's a funny image for me a ship stopping to "tomar aceite" (like a person drinking a liquid), but it would be understood, I guess.
However, in cars, for example, "aceite" and "gasolina" are better not poured in each other's containers.
If that's still your Puerto Rican man, maybe it's an English-influenced expression, from "oil".

That's what I thought too, and might just go with fuel as what he meant to say by aceite. It does make more sense.

A ship could conceivably stop to 'aprovisionarse de aceite o crudo' y diesel.
