Un día especial (preterite and imperfect)

I am finding this hard to understand even when i translate it and my teacher said it will be on a test soon and we should know what each unconjugated verb is in the preterite or imperfect, and why it is either preterite or imperfect. Thanks in advance.

Please provide your answers and the reasons you chose one tense over the other. We'll help you to figure out what isn't right.
If you don't know the conjugation, there is a conjugation chart available on this site, in the upper left-hand portion of the screen under the logo. In the search box, enter the infinitive and select Conjugations.
