- to represent, to mean, representar, significar
"What does ETA stand for?" "ETA stands for estimated time of arrival".
What does the little red mark stand for? It means the student arrived late for class.

- ser un candidato (político)
He stood for Parliament. - Se ofreció para Parlamento. (UK)
He ran for Parliament. - Se ofreció para Parlamento. (US)

- to support, apoyar, defender
He stands (up) for children's rights - El apoya los derechos de los niños
He stands (up) for liberty - Defiende la libertad
