We use the words to forge or to conterfeit coins, banknotes, passports, works of art etc. Heptonstall,a village near me was once famous (or infamous) for a gang of coiners, who used to shave a little off the gold coins. They would then mill the edges again to make them look new.
Their "King" David Hartley, was subsequently hanged for murder in 1770 and buried in the churchyard. |
