In my case, while I live in California, I still feel myself unquestionably from Spain... and I know people in LA who have a very obvious Madrid accent, and they will never lose it, even if they have been here for 20 years...
At any rate, hopefully Perikles or Poli get inspired and remember an equivalent saying in English...
