I got a message a while back from someone needing help with Spanish vocabulary associated with cockfighting (peleas de gallos). Some vocab. needed:

rooster - gallo
cockfight - pelea de gallos ?
gaffs (small knives strapped to the rooster's legs) - navajas?
spurs (fighting roosters usually have their spurs cut off) - espolones?
comb (feathers on the top of the head) - __________

If you know any of this vocabulary, or anything else that's relevant, I'd be appreciative.

Each translation you provided was correct, and I provided the word for 'comb.'

I am not at all familiar with the sport of cockfighting, but was able to find all the words on the Internet.

Its "grisly" as David says but I guess not anymore than Bullfighting.

Ive called cockfighting, combati de gallos. I guess maybe thats not correct but it sure is easy to remember.

Pelea de gallos: Cockfight
Navajas: Gaffs
Espolones: Spurs
Cresta: Comb
Gallera: Cockpit
Galleros - the owners of the roosters
Palenque - the venue
Cuerda: The house where roosters are "trained".
Picoteo: When one of the roosters falls defeated, the opponent is approached to it, so it can attack three more times. If the other one does not respond, the living one is declared winner.

Some types of roosters:
· Marañón: Its feathers are mostly reddish brown and red.
· Canagüey: Most feathers are white, and some are brown.
· Zambo: Mostly black-feathered.
· Cenizo: With grey feathers.
· Giro: It has many colours, it can have green, yellow and silver feathers.
· Pinto: Its feathers are dark, spotted with white ones.
· Javaos: Feathers are mostly yellow and white.
· Marcianos: Each time they change feathers, they also change colours.
· Gallino: The ones with short-feathered tails.

Is there a name for a person that trains the gallos? A person that trains them for the owner?

I can use the word cockfighting as a usages or idiom.

For example yesterday I could to see a great cockfighting between two people in the street.

Is correct my sentence using the word cockfighting as an idiom?

In English we never use cockfighting as an idiom.
