Adios

Adios

Hello,
In Spanish the word for bye is 'Adios' (I guess), but literally translated it means "To God". Do you advice me to say Hasta Luego or just Adios? Thanks in advance,

Greetings,
Dr. Deejay

Do you advise me ...
= Should I say ...

Adiós (notice the accent mark) is widely used as a despedida. Using 'hasta luego' is a good alternate. You can also say 'chao' or 'nos vemos'.

There's an 'Accents' drop-down menu above where you type. You can use it to insert all the special characters you'll need in Spanish. :)

Perhaps you can learn more by looking in this thread.

Sorry but where is the 'Accents' drop down?

Adiós translates directly to the English (from French) adieu.

"Adiós" comes from a sentence: "A Dios te encomiendo" ("To God I commend you") is the one I learnt.

Bienvenido

Just above the text area, when you're responding/replying to a post.

Just to confuse matters, locals here in Tenerife say Adios when they mean 'hello'

Adiós seems to me to have such finality to it that lately I've been attracted to saying instead either Hasta más ver or Hasta la próxima or Hasta que nos topemos or even Ahí nos vidrios (as a take-off on Nos vemos), so as to leave open the possibility of meeting again. Am I right? What are some other possibilities?

In most Argentina "adiós" sounds like "and I won't see you ever again" though it is obviously understood as a good-bye. "Chau", "hasta luego" (or "mañana" or "la semana que viene"), "hasta cualquier momento" or "hasta la próxima" are the standard way here.

In which context do they say it? If you go into a shop, will they say "adiós"?

Being a teacher ,sometimes while I'm walking, I can hear a student saying "adiós, maestro" from the other side of the street. We could start talking after that "adiós". I think "adiós" is used here just because I haven't seen him, and it is a way of getting my attention. On the other hand, if both of us have seen each other, we will say "hola".
