Dappled?

Dappled?

In the 59th Street Bridge song by Simon & Garfunkel there is line that reads,

I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.

Maybe it is too early in the morning... but I cannot find a fitting definition for "dappled"...

Any authoritative idea or suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

The wordreference English-language entry for "dapple/dappled" lists the noun "dapple" as a patch of color or light, which is also how I understand the word, and they define the verb "dapple" as to mark with spots or rounded patches. I associate the word with horses (a type of marking pattern) and with sunlight falling between leaves and branches or some other type of partial obstruction.

This line evokes an image of reclining in a hammock or on a blanket under the partial shade of a tree on a warm summer day; the area under the tree is dappled in sun and shadow, while I lie there drowsy and about to doze off.

Does this help at all?

This is more a suggestion than an authoritative idea, but there seem to be quite a few people who agree: the easiest explanation is that it makes no sense at all and was probably written while under the influence of some psychoactive substance.

@ wrholt - This helps A LOT!
I kind of had an inkling of the idea you describe so well, but your explanation makes the picture waaaay more clear.
Thank you!

@pjt33 - Oh, I had not seen your answer pjt33, when I wrote my acknowledgement to wrholt...

As I note, I tend to think with his interpretation, more than the druggie theory... I believe that while Edgar Allan Poe had a problem with alcohol, and some singers could have some problems with drugs... these were not the factors for their success... (rather the contrary...) But that is another subject altogether...
