conocer = to know someone

This is the simple answer. Both verbs are used in various ways and can sometimes be interchanged.

I've also heard "de más" here when expressing "too" or "too much."

Ella está flaca de más. She's too skinny.

Saber is to know of something and how to do something - conocer is to be acquainted with somebody; e.g. you saber montar una bicicleta, conducir, nadar etc; but you conocer a Paco.

Conozco a Maria, y sé que es enfermera - I know Maria, and I know she's a nurse.


In Spain «ella está flaca de más» would be taken as «ella está flaca además» "She's too skinny besides".

Además is 'besides'; demás is 'the rest' - lo demás is 'the rest of it'.

de más - too much, many

Mucho: going together with substantive

- Mucho calor
- Mucho trabajo
- Mucho dinero (all mine :) )

Demasiado can be used with both adjectives and substantives, meaning 'too much'

To answer the question:

You say: Eres demasiado 'algo'. (no 'de algo')

I'm not. I hear "de más" here frequently. Sancho brought in all of the other examples.
