High-end

High-end

Tomísmo Dictionary gives for 'high-end product', 'producto de buena calidad'. That seems fine.
Yet, 'high-end' gives me the idea of being the most expensive and technically sophisticated, as in a high-end stereo equipment.
It is definitely 'un producto de buena calidad', but it seems to be more than that, as in 'producto de primerísima calidad' or 'de la tecnología más sofisticada/elevada'... you name it.

Is my perception of the term off here?
How would you translate "high-end camera"?

High end is the high priced brand. In the United States, Saks is a high -end retailer and Target is not. High end is definitely linked to expensive brand names.

High-end may mean high quality but not necessarily. The emporer's new
clothes may play a role. Incidentally what is the term for the emporer's new clothes in Spanish?

JPablo July 26, 2010 07:48 AM

Thank you Poli, tracking with all, except with "emporer's"?

AngelicaDeAlquezar July 26, 2010 09:25 AM

@Poli:The tale is called "La ropa nueva/el traje nuevo del emperador".
But I'm not sure about the way we would use it related to the kind of objects Pablo talks about.

@Pablo: ¿Lo non-plus ultra en cámaras? :D

It is related in that some high-end items are the same or less good than
standard products. The emperor's new clothes is a story about hype. The hapless emperor was hyped into thinking he was wearing something special when in fact he was wearing nothing.

The high-end cosmetics business is famous for this.

JPablo July 26, 2010 10:01 AM

Ah, thank you to both of you. Yes, I knew the tale... I was not sure what you meant, but being "emperor", that makes sense. (Also, sometimes some item is high-quality, but it also has a "name" or a "trademark" that makes it even 10 times more expensive than the same high-quality item, without that 'name'...) For the purposes of what I need to translate, I got the idea. :)

poli July 26, 2010 10:05 AM

Yes, the emperor's new clothes should be taught in school. In contemporary society, it's almost as important as being aware of the
golden rule. (¿la regla dorada?)

AngelicaDeAlquezar July 26, 2010 12:27 PM

I see now. Thanks, Poli.
We use that tale a little less, but I think in context it should be understood. :)

As for the golden rule, it's "regla de oro".
Some people also say "regla número uno", to mean it's the most important thing you have to learn. :)

JPablo July 26, 2010 08:47 PM

¿Coincidimos? :)

sosia July 28, 2010 03:27 AM

direct translation (used) is "Una cámara de alta calidad" or "una cámra de la más alta calidad".
The usual name for a high-end brand is "productos de gama alta"

saludos :D

JPablo July 28, 2010 03:51 AM

¡Muchas gracias, Sosia! (por tu 'high-end' respuesta... ;)) :)

viveka July 28, 2010 01:46 PM

Angélica,

non-plus ultra
me suena más a
state-of-the-art

high end,

That´s a high-end car.
Ese auto está por las nubes.

"por las nubes" very costly.

JPablo July 29, 2010 04:41 AM
