Can someone properly translate this poem?

I got this from an audio book website. I can definitely see that their translation is about 60% WRONG.

When reading in spanish I have a habit of translating and speaking aloud in english. I should keep it all spanish right? I know I cant help but to think it in english though.

"de ir" "de empacar" "de whatever"

Is there a rule for when you use something like "de empacar" vs. "empacando". At first it only seemed like you use it for words that cant have a real "ndo" ending... like "de fiesta" means partying....

In the following sentence, is this just used as "what"? Why is it like this instead of just "que".

Why does one of these sentences use "se" and the other "fue". Both sentences say object "was" blah blah blah....

I am probably just speaking how you would hear it in English but it is probably not common in Spanish to hear it this way.

Thank you. I think one of the problems that I am having is that I am learning "Latin American" Spanish and I live in Florida where it is mostly "Spain" Spanish and there are differences.
