telenovela: soap opera.
When it's more "serious" it's called "teleserie", "serie de televisión" or simply "serie" (CSI, House, Desesperate Housewifes, Lost, Heroes and so on...)

soap opera

since we're talking about telenovelas, I've always wondered why are they called soaps????? "Telenovelas" make sense, it's usually a televised novel.....but soap???

They're called soaps because after so long people wash their hands of them. (Sorry, I found that answer on the Internet and loved it.)
Because they're dirty. (Sorry again.)

They're called soaps because the earliest ones were principally sponsored by companies that make soap and detergents.
