Artífice/arquitecto

As a native English speaker, I would normally use the closest cognate
architect/arquitecto, but I was reading a article that used artífice.
Is there a difference? I am guessing that artífice may be a more abstract ter .example: Who was the architect of this brilliant scheme(this can be very sarcastic.)? ¿ Quién fue el artífice de este proyecto?
