It was the god of the Aztecs that gave the mother 'that' daughter. 'That' daughter is the direct object. She is who was given by the god of the Aztecs to the mother.
The indirect object pronoun te refers to the mother. The prepositional phrase a esa niña is the direct object. The personal 'a' is necessary when the direct object is a person.
By the way, after the direct object just discussed, it should read para que le enseñaras a conducirse .... The noun clause 'a conducirse en la vida' is the direct object, and le refers to the granddaughter. Here the preposition 'a' (to) introduces the verb.
