I believe the chileno may be mixing pronouns here(that Miapo Valley red wine it effecting him negatively no doubt--although moderate use is good for translation). I believe my second most recent translation (the children were used to you telling them stories) is the right one.

I had to resort to that so that you can see it inyour mind.
