No soy muy dado a las explicaciones, pero bueno...

En inglés existe una distinción, llamémosla "formal", entre cuando algo es posible (can) y cuando algo se posibilita (may). Esa diferencia puede quedar expresada o no en español mediante otros verbos (posibilitarse, sin ir más lejos) y la combinación de otras estructuras el modo subjuntivo o adverbios (quizás, tal vez, posiblemente...)

Otra opción:

Los resultados quizás varíen.

The first is a very common way to say 'Results may vary'. You can use the second, but it needs changed to 'Puede que varíen los resultados' or 'Los resultados puede que varíen'.

Thanks both of you. Sorry to say I'm still confused as to why puede que and not pueden que since resultados is plural. Is puede que an unchangeable set phrase for "may" that works with either singular or plural nouns? That would make it like the English "may," covering both, and I'm still hung up on the Spanish subject-verb (not to mention subject-adjective) agreement.

The piece you might be missing is that there are actually two clauses. 'It may be that' is the first clause. 'It' is the subject and it is singular. "The results vary" is the second clause. It is cast in the subjunctive because of the other clause.

Your approach is logical, Glen. The explanation is that some structures became a set phase over time. "Puede que" works as an adverb ("quizás"), it's not a verbal conjugation.
