Dar Por Sentado/Hecho

Since I’m talking about “vecinos,” which is plural, do I need to use “dan por sentados/hechos” or is “dan por sentado/hecho” correct?

We took his visit for granted, and it turned out he didn’t come
Dimos su visita por sentada/hecha y resultó que no vino

Following along the same lines, is “sentada/hecha” correct since I’m talking about “su visita”?

Easy answer, difficult issue.

The agreement in all expressions with "dar" + "por" must agree in gender and number with the direct object of the verb "dar":

- Los vecinos dan por hechos/sentados los servicios que se les brindan.
- Dimos su visita por sentada y no llegó.
- Pedro nunca va a apoyarnos. Mejor lo damos por muerto.
- Las mujeres de esta familia nunca nos damos por vencidas.
- Hace muchos meses que estoy en pleito con el banco. Mis amigos me dicen que dé mi dinero por perdido, porque no parece que lo vaya a recuperar nunca.
- Tenemos problemas de comunicación porque las cosas se dan por supuestas.
- El árbitro dio por buenas muchas jugadas que no estaban permitidas.


Big but: Many speakers find the agreement obvious, like in "darse por vencido(a)", but they completely miss it in "dar por hecho/sentado".
So you will find plenty of times sentences like your first example, and you might even get weird looks if you make the right agreement, but in all cases, it's the gender and number of the direct object of the verb "dar":

- Damos por sentado tus buenos modales.
- Damos por sentados tus buenos modales.

- Dimos por sentado su ayuda, pero nunca hizo nada por nosotros.
- Dimos por sentada su ayuda, pero nunca hizo nada por nosotros.

- El jefe da por hecho los reportes. ¿Ya los acabaste?
- El jefe da por hechos los reportes. ¿Ya los acabaste?

- El equipo daba por seguro su victoria, pero perdió.
- El equipo daba por segura su victoria, pero perdió.


This must be due to the fact that when the DO comes as a subordinate sentence, the past participle seems invariable:

- Los vecinos dan por hecho que tenemos que limpiar su cochera.
- Dimos por sentado que nos visitaría pero nunca llegó.
- Doy por seguro que tienes buenos modales.
- Dábamos por sentado que se nos apoyaría, pero tuvimos que hacer las cosas solos.
- Todos dan por supuesto que cuando estén vacunados podrán rehacer su vida normal.
