I wouldn't like to say "In accordance with" because it could sound like repetition.

When used in this sense, it's "according to", not "accordance with". "Accordance with" you would have to have something before and after: This new rule about cell phone use in school is in accordance with the increased popularity of text messaging.

If you're talking about someone who says or thinks or believes something, you use "according to": According to my mother, the "good old days" were better.

If you're looking for an alternate way to say it, you might want to say "According to X, blah, blah, blah. Corresponding to his theory..." But that would sound a bit stuffy. Remember that we English speakers don't necessarily have the same hang-up with repetition or "euphony" (like Malila talks about) as Spanish-speakers seem to.....

So "corresponding" would be a good alternative, wouldn't it? I'm writing formally. I thought I had seem "following" in some similar contexts.

I really don't think that sounds very good. You could avoid the problem by removing the first 'According':

X argues that bla bla bla. In accordance with this theory ....
X maintains that .....
X takes the view that .....

Suppose X has a theory, which is explained and developed. If you are referring to something which is already part of that theory, then it is according to that theory. If you are talking of something which is not yet part of the theory, but agrees with it, then it is in accordance with that theory.

Einstein announced his theory of relativity in 1898 (?). According to this theory, the speed of light is constant in any frame of reference.

Last week, astrophysicists measured the ...bla bla... of distant galaxies.. bla bla. These measurements are in accordance with Einstein's theory of relativity.

According to is probably more common (49 to 21 in BNC)

You can't really be "in accordance with" a person. If person X has told you something, and you repeat what X has said, then you would say "according to X.... "

Can't you say for example: "According to the theory of Mr. X or According to Mr. X's theory...."

It seems to me that "in accordance with" denotes compliance instead of merely citing another person's words/theory. For example: The police officer performed his duties in accordance with the law.
