¿Es la vocale realmente un "a" o es un schwa como en inglés?

Es 'a'. En español las vocales son /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/*, y las semivocales /j/ y /w/ se usan también en diptongos y triptongos.


* Segun el diccionario de Oxford. Según otra fuente que encontré por Wikipedia son /ä/, /e̞/, /i/, /o̞/, /u/

No it's not. However, since the emphasis is on the second "a", the first one is a little weaker than the second one.
