Estar contento de

Is the preposition ‘de’ necessary here? Can we omit it?

Estoy contento de poder volver a España este verano.
Estoy contento de que he podido volver a España este verano.
Estoy contento de que pude volver a España este verano.

Thank you.

Yes, it's necessary. "Estar contento de/por" are collocations.

By the way, the constructions with the subjunctive sound a little clumsy... we prefer the first one, because it's the same subject for both verbs.

"Estoy contento de haber podido volver a España" would express clearly the fact that you actually were there during the summer.
