Nominative absolute?

At present, I am reading a book in Spanish which is a translation from English, and sometimes I wonder whether the Spanish is rather stilted or even bad. For example, I have just read

Una vez limpios los platos, X volvió a leventarse.

This construction reminds me of the Latin ablative absolute and the Greek genitive absolute constructions, so I've invented a name for the Spanish one. Is this perfectly acceptable Spanish?

Entiendo que sería mejor: "Una vez había lavado los platos,..." o "Cuando ya tenía los platos limpios,....

Traducir no es fácil. El año pasado hice una asignatura de traducción y penalizaban muchísimo los anglicismos. Y a veces casi caes en ellos sin darte cuenta.

The thing is, from the context it is absolutely clear that the person who rose from his seat was not the one who cleaned the plates. The English must have been equivalent to 'the plates having been cleaned' ... i.e. an absolute expression indicating no connection between it and what followed.

I think the Spanish could be considered a bit stilted. I'd not consider it bad.
If you don't tell me it was a translation, I would just go with it, as an original Spanish.

I know many "Anglicisms" that are considered "bad" as translations in some cases are only "detected" by the "Specialists" on Translations, and/or the "Authorities" on the matter.

Well, while I'd not deny the authority such personalities/professors may have... I trust better the "Li T'ai Po" test...

He would write a poem and go to the Flower Seller at the corner and read it to her... If she understood it, he would keep the poem to publish it... if she couldn't understand it, he would rip the poem to pieces... And his poetry has endured...

Just as an example...

An old friend of my dad wrote some scatological poem, unpublishable here, besides the fact that I don't remember the whole thing... But a couple of the lines were,

"Acabada la faena, tírese de la cadena
Si no sale la cag*da, repítase la jugada"

(Although in my example there is a clear connection, still is a similar structure...)

Damn - I hate inventing something after somebody else, but the examples given are not actually absolutes, because there is a connection between the phrases.

In my text, the person who rises from his chair has not cleaned the plates. In fact, the plates cleaned themselves.

Friega.

A common construction in Spanish with a participle:

Una vez comprendido el tema, haremos ejercicios.
Dicho esto, hablaremos de lo otro.

It's an impersonal expression, and it seems to be fairly justified by the fact that the dishes were cleaned without a person washing them.

I found this: "Ablativo absoluto ... Normalmente corresponde en castellano a una oración subordinada circunstancial, temporal o causal". There are plenty of examples with "una vez ..." in CREA and CORDE, some very old. I think there's no influence of English here.
