I only know, "agravarse" "aumentar rápidamente" "crecer hasta proporciones gigantescas"...
In your example I'd say, "se agravó con rapidez..."

Por influencia del inglés, aquí se llega a escuchar "crecer como bola de nieve".
Pero coincido con que puede ser empeorar, agravarse, agrandarse, amplificarse, volverse más grande... y tengo una sobrina que dice: "de lagartija creció a cocodrilo", pero no es expresión común.
