I guess #3 is wrong because "hice" determines the use of "fue".

Wouldn't it be correct because I put in "hacíamos"? 1 is also wrong because I just put "hicimos" and "hicimos," right? Maybe it would be better to add in "aprender" so that there are not two "hacer" verbs next to each other.

Why don't you write in English what you want to say and give me both versions... I guarantee things in your head will begin to straighten up.

It is era, because you are telling about the experience, it is a tale or whatever...

Now, that is so in this context, it might change depending on how you decide to tell your story.

You see, it might've perfectly been: The homework about X resulted to be very interesting to me/us etc.

In that case you could use resultó or fue.

Leí X y Y. La X era (cuando lo leía me parecía/era interesante) muy interesante porque tenía muchos detalles de cómo era/fue la vida para ellos.

I read X and Y. X was very interesting because it had a lot of details about how life was like for them.
