1) Quita importancia y/o contrasta estas afirmaciones usando aunque.

ej. No quiero ir a esa fiesta ---- Aunque no quieras, irás.

a) No salgas, hace mucho frío.
Aunque haga mucho frío, saldrás.
b) No queremos hacer este examen, es demasiado difícil.
Aunque el examen sea difícil, lo haremos.
c) A los niños no les gusta el pescado.
Aunque a los niños no les guste el pescado, lo comerán.
d) El perro no quiere ir de paseo porque está lloviendo.
Aunque esté lloviendo, el perro irá de paseo.

2) Une cada par de ideas usando aunque, por muy… que y por mucho que.

ej. Estuvimos en Finlandia en junio. Llovió mucho, pero nos divertimos mucho. ----- Aunque llovió mucho, nos divertimos mucho.

a) No sé si María come mucho, pero no creo que engorde.
Por mucho que María coma, no engorda.
b) Normalmente duermo poco, pero no me siento cansado.

(No entiendo el segundo parte del enunciado…)

Ayer, aunque madrugué, llegué tarde al trabajo.
g) No sé si su novio es muy trabajador, pero no creo que consiga independizarse.
Por muy trabajador sea su novio, no conseguirá independizarse.

3) Escribe cinco oraciones concesivas en pasado, presente o futuro. Usa indicativo o subjuntivo. Justifica cada respuesta.

a) Aunque los estudiantes tienen muchos problemas en esa escuela, voy a enseñarles. (Es un hecho que los estudiantes son desfavorecidos y será difícil enseñar en esa escuela.)
b) Aunque te sientas mal, tendré que ir a la oficina mañana. (No sé si mañana todavía vas a estar enfermo o no.)
c) Aunque no me quedé en Nueva York la semana pasada, descansé en mi propia casa por unos días. (De hecho, no me quedé en NY.)
d) Aunque me hubiera quedado en Nueva York la semana pasada, tendría que acompañar a mi amiga a su oficina. (Pero no me quedé en NY.)
e) Aunque mañana tuviera que trabajar, podría ir al cine contigo. (No sé si tendré que trabajar mañana, pero es muy poco probable.)

Por mucho que Mario beba, es un mal hábito. You're expressing the opposite idea.
e) No sé cuántos grados hay, pero no creo que estemos mal al sol.
(No entiendo el segundo (gender agreement) parte del enunciado…) Yo tampoco la entiendo. Supongo que "no estar mal al sol" quiere decir que no corremos peligro de quemarnos.
Por mucho calor que haga, estaremos (The verb must be in negative form, as the idea is in the original sentence; otherwise, you're expressing the contrary idea) mal al sol.
f) Ayer madrugué, pero llegué tarde al trabajo.
Ayer, aunque madrugué, llegué tarde al trabajo.
g) No sé si su novio es muy trabajador, pero no creo que consiga independizarse.
Por muy trabajador sea su novio, no conseguirá independizarse.

d) Aunque me hubiera quedado en Nueva York la semana pasada, tendría (You used a compound tense before, this verb has to agree with the previous one) que acompañar a mi amiga a su oficina. (Pero no me quedé en NY.)
e) Aunque mañana tuviera que trabajar, podría ir al cine contigo. (No sé si tendré que trabajar mañana, pero es muy poco probable.) (Grammatically correct, but I'm not sure about what you mean here, can you go to the movies with me or not?)

Okay - here are my second attempts:

c) ¿¿...?? No sé....
d) Por mucho que Mario no beba, es un mal hábito. (I'm guessing this is wrong, but I don't know how to express the opposite - the exercise only gave "muy" and "mucho" as examples... Could it possibly be "por menos que"???)
e) Por mucho calor que haga, estaremos bien al sol. (Again, I honestly believe this is wrong, but I have no idea....)

a) (¿Por qué el "?"? Quiero decir "disadvantaged". Does "desfavorecido" not mean "disadvantaged"?)
c) I meant to say something like: "Even though I didn't stay in New York last week, I rested in my own house for a couple of days." How would you say that? Does it not fit the model?

However, the immediate choice for a native speaker would have been with "aunque".

I want to believe that "estar bien al sol" means to like it, and that it has no implication on how healthy it is or how many skin cancers it can give to you, which is the reason why this example bothers us.

a) (¿Por qué el "?"? Quiero decir "disadvantaged". Does "desfavorecido" not mean "disadvantaged"?) This is a calque from English. En español no se es ni se está desfavorecido. :thinking.
The adjective goes straight with the noun:
- Las clases más desfavorecidas reciben apoyos gubernamentales.
- Estamos analizando cuáles son los grupos más desfavorecidos para diseñar los programas de desarrollo.
- Ofrecieron muchas becas para estudiantes desfavorecidos.
I think your sentence can be reformulated to avoid the construction that sounds awkward.

c) I meant to say something like: "Even though I didn't stay in New York last week, I rested in my own house for a couple of days." How would you say that? Does it not fit the model? I'd make sure to clearly state that although most of the week you weren't there, you did stay a couple of days at home. The last emphasis can be made inserting a "sí".

I tried to use (3c) as the first example of pasado and (3d) as the second example. If I hadn't written (3c) as I did, would (3d) be correct? I only see two examples in past tense there, but the second one says: "Ayer, aunque hubiera llovido, habría ido al concierto." This is your model.
e) I tried to model this after the third example in the future tense (same page as previous).... That's alright, I only wanted to make sure that you mean what you think you are saying. Your sentence says that whether you are working or not, you're still planning to go to the movies with me (nothing is settled yet, since you're using the conditional), but I don't know if this is what you meant.

Not that difficult; you are doing alright. As far as I know, nobody gets the equations right at first try.

3e) Yes, that is what I meant.

I think it's difficult because in English, there are no grammatical ways to nuance these different meanings. I'm still not sure what each of my sentences is actually saying - I'm really trying to follow the formulas here... :-/

Look out! Following formulas without being sure of what you are saying will not help you understand how they work. It's like solving an equation without understanding what a variable is.
Make questions, play with meanings, set situations. Calquing the examples can only help you acquire fluency to use them when you need them, but only if you are aware of what they are for.

I agree that memorizing formulas without knowing what they mean is not good - I want to continue to look through these examples ... I have the exercise set aside so that I can practice writing more sentences and contemplating them. I like that the author included the justifications for each. It helped me chip away at the meanings. (What is "calquing"?)

A calque is a loan translation. Sorry, it's only a noun, but I took it for a verb too (the verb "calcar" does exist in Spanish).
I meant copying formulas.
