immagination but don't get carried away. For example: I know the English word for cement so for Spanish I just add the letter o. cemento. You know the English word for "the list" so just add the letter a. la lista - But you can't always do that. I'm going to send you a list/una lista of words and phrases you need to know to learn Spanish that are not just cognates. Also a list of Spanish adverbs. One of the great things about learning Spanish is you will become even better at your own native language. Learning Spanish will increase your English vocabulary and will teach you grammar you might not have learned while learning English. For example all or many or the grammar terms you didn't learn in English you will learn when you learn Spanish. The parts of speech, the article, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions ect. ect. Spanish comes from Latin and Greek and most of our higher or advanced vocabulary/words in English come from Latin and Greek. English vocabulary is about 60% from Latin and 12% from Greek. You need to make flash cards the list above in my other post. Last edited by Villa; October 12, 2013 at 11:28 AM. |

@Orangeamigo: Some words can be "transferred" from one language to another with some regularity when their origin is the same. Most of the words Villa has listed come from Greek or Latin and that is why they are similar and respond to certain patterns, even if their meaning in one language is not exactly the same in the other all the time.
The origin of the words in every language comes from their own sources and develop own history, so one cannot expect that all words from my language can be related in form to those in some other. Try understanding first words in a context, and then try to use them by yourself. Only when you are used to their similarities and differences, you can start to transfer what you know from experience into the foreign language with confidence and certainty that you are actually saying what you mean. ![]()
