[ir + participio] es una perífrasis verbal que indica un proceso gradual; que la acción no se realiza en un solo acto sino que va adquiriendo forma y consolidándose progresivamente en un determinado período.
No hay que asociarlo con todos los usos de "will be ....ing": we will be landing shortly = aterrizaremos en breve

Y era gerundio, no participio, me olvidé de aclarar. Una ejemplo curioso de esta perífrasis que tiene un punto de contacto con "will be ...ing": Me voy yendo = I'm leaving (in fact: I'm about to leave)
