So far in my clases and books when responding to someone you only ever deal with the main subject and you do not bring up different subjects. I am wondering if this is done only to keep things simple or is it part of the language?

For example:
"¿Es intelligente el doctor?" is met with
"Si, el doctor es Intelligente."

But can I shorten my response and add to the sentence like I would in English?
"No, pero el doctor es muy barato"

Books and classes have their agenda. Spoken language can go any way you'd like it.
