Something or someone can "tardar", but we cannot "tardar" something or someone.

- El autobús está tardando mucho en llegar.
The bus is very late in arriving.

- Espérame aquí, no tardo.
Wait for me here, I won't be long.

If you say "debemos", it means "we must", but if you use the conditional, "deberíamos", then the verb means "we should"/"we ought to".

· Debes beber menos.
You must drink less.
· Deberías beber menos.

· Rosa debe saber que eres casado.
Rosa must know that you are married.
· Rosa debería saber que eres casado.
Rosa ought to know that you're married.

· Debemos comprar un auto nuevo.

Another way to express obligation is with the verb "haber" + que + infinitive; this makes an impersonal sentence:

The box must be opened to know what's inside.

- Hay que limpiar la casa.
The house must be cleaned.


You can also use "tener que", which, depending on the context, may mean "have to" or "need to"

- Tengo que ir a la escuela. / Debo ir a la escuela.
I have to/must go to school.

- Esto sabe horrible. Tienes que aprender a cocinar. / Necesitas aprender a cocinar.
This tastes awful. You have/need to learn to cook.

i usually hear demorar used more often to mean how long it takes to do something, or that it takes a while to complete an action: "Nos demoramos 15 minutos" "Cuanto se demoraron en el viaje?"
