Yes, that's one (prescriptivistic) definition of can. But it is also used just like may. I read somewhere that even Shakespere used it like that sometimes, so it's not a new thing.

Hmm. I wouldn't use the word "wannabe" in that context. Most people who are not "true Christians" don't really want to be a Christian, they just call themselves something that they don't practice.

For me:
Informal: "Can I borrow your pencil?"
