So far in my clases and books when responding to someone you only ever deal with the main subject and you do not bring up different subjects. I am wondering if this is done only to keep things simple...

Still lost on estar and some ser stuff
So I can ask basic questions about where things are, but my understanding stops there. So I believe "¿Donde está el cuaderno?" is correct, but then I wonder what the meaning of the variants are.
