This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 21, 2009

encogerse (verb) — to shrink. Look up encogerse in the dictionary

La lana y la piel se encojen al mojarse.
Wool and leather shrink when they get wet.

To me leather is cuero and piel is skin.

I think it should be "se encogen".

Piel viva es skin. Leather es cuero, pero (raramente - e.g. en algunos textos de antropología) se puede hablar de "leather made from/with human skin".

En México se usa "piel" para el cuero tratado de manera que se le añadan texturas y colores. Se habla de "ropa de piel", "bolsas de piel".
Se usa "piel de víbora", "piel de cocodrilo", "piel de carnero"...
El cuero se entiende por aquí en formas más en bruto, normalmente sin colores añadidos (o color "natural") y con apariencia más tosca.
