Libre de calumnia

La frase es "Yo,por mi parte,digo esto: uno no está libre nunca de la calumnia...."
Cuál sentido está más cerca: 1. Calumnia puede sucederse a todos.
2. Una vez acusado uno , está dificil librarse de la calumnia ?

No entiendo lo de "sucederse" ¿es "sucederle a todos"?
Creo (como los anteriores) que es una frase muy normal, que indica que uno nunca está libre de que le acusen de algo falsamente.
