Se trata de un ejercicio propuesto en un curso de español para estranjeros:

¿UN POCO DE MATES?

siete ciruelas x 2 = catorce ciruelas

..................... x 6 = doce coliflores

Es algo como "multiplication table"?

Yes, "mates" ("mate" is another thing) is the common word form "matemáticas" among students.

For those who would like to know how we read those mathematical signs:

Siete ciruelas por dos, igual a catorce ciruelas
Dos coliflores por seis, igual a doce coliflores

My idea is that we're doing exercises of arithmetic and not mathematics.

I think that because

Arithmetic .. is the oldest and most elementary branch of mathematics

and if we are doing exercises in arithmetic then by definition we are also doing exercises in mathematics. Simple mathematics, but still mathematics.

Un ejercicio de matemáticas (en la Argentina, matemática -que es una sola-), en particular uno de aritmética -una rama de la matemática o una de las "matemáticas", según el uso de cada país-.

Será porque acá hay gente a la que le zumba el mate.
