Many thanks for all your help here, I really appreciate it. Just one more question on this, if I may:
No creo que se 'le' haya hecho mucho daño. We're referring to the fact that the driver (a third person) injured the dog. No creo que se 'lo' haya hecho mucho daño. We're now referring to the fact that the car (an object) injured the dog. Would this be accurate? |

Not exactly. "Le" and "lo" do not distinguish between persons and animals/things, but between indirect object and direct object.
We say "no creo que se le haya hecho daño (al perro)", because the dog is the indirect object in the sentence. In "No creo que el golpe lo haya lastimado", "el golpe" is the sentence subject and "lo" refers to the dog as the direct object.
