Cinco de mayo is definitely celebrated a lot more in the US than in Mexico (if celebrated at all), mostly due to the fact that I think most people think it's Mexico's Independence Day--that thought is entirely subjective though). It is the battle of Puebla contra Francia!
The
real independence day of Mexico is on the 16th of September and it definitely
is celebrated by many. This is the date where in each city or centro (downtown), "el presidente municipal" comes out of the window (or whatever it may be) and shouts "¡Viva México!" I was actually in Playa del Carmen for this last year and the pride that exists is amazing, even though I kind of wish I was in Mérida for the shout.
Another big celebration is the 20th of November, which celebrates the Mexican Revolution.
I'm not in any way a specialist in Mexican history, but I'm pretty sure those are right, or at least what I experienced when I lived in Mexico
