Edward Teach or Edward Thatch (c. 1680 – November 22, 1718), better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies during the early 1700s.

I guess a blackbeard is somebody with similar characteristics.

Or it could be a typo for blackbird if context suits.

O sea, o "Barbanegra" o "pájaro negro", ¿no? (o sea un "mirlo" o un "totí" para la segunda posibilidad.)

Para la opción de "blackbird from Liverpool" supongo que Mr. Perikles se refiere a Sir Paul McCartney... right?

I'm afraid not. It was a pathetic attempt at humour, a reference to the Liverpool accent which pronouces 'blackbird' as 'blackbeard'.

Oh, I take then, it was for 'natives', but once we know the accent thing, we can also smile at least.
