"Después se le veía gordito dando órdenes y disponiéndolo todo, ..."
Si entendí bien "verse gordo " es un modismo .Creo que significa " me veo como jefe" Correcto ?

Puede ser, no estoy seguro de haberlo visto u oído así, pero en una época dada verse gordito era sinónimo de estatus y de "buena salud", de estar bien cuidado y alimentado.

en este caso es más "hacerse el importante", como tu dices "verse como alguien importante/jefe"
si te ayuda a traducir, el adjetivo que yo hubiese usado es
"se le veía orondo", donde
