I don’t think he was badly injured.

(Context: my dog had been knocked down by a car)

"Le" is alright if you're talking about a third person who injured him.

Two more comments on the rest of the sentence:

"Hiciera" should be "haya hecho", because you're talking about something that has already happened.

And I think we don't use "pensar" like that.
"Pienso que..." should be better used when you are expressing a whole reasoning principle or a strong belief.

But for a more immediate consideration, like this, it's better to say "creo que...".

I think for the case of your injured dog I'd say things like: "no creo que esté muy lastimado", "creo que no se lastimó mucho", "creo que (el coche) no lo lastimó mucho"...

Many thanks for all your help here, I really appreciate it. Just one more question on this, if I may:

No creo que se 'le' haya hecho mucho daño.
We're referring to the fact that the driver (a third person) injured the dog.

We're now referring to the fact that the car (an object) injured the dog.

Would this be accurate?

Not exactly. "Le" and "lo" do not distinguish between persons and animals/things, but between indirect object and direct object.

We say "no creo que se le haya hecho daño (al perro)", because the dog is the indirect object in the sentence.

In "No creo que el golpe lo haya lastimado", "el golpe" is the sentence subject and "lo" refers to the dog as the direct object.
