This thread has a discussion on it.
"Añorar" in Mexico is too strong and more for emotional lacks than for people. A mis sesenta y cinco años, añoro mis días de juventud. Añoro la época que pasé de niño con mis abuelos. Siendo adulto, añoraba su infancia.

In Costa Rica we understand "te voy a echar de menos" but more often say "Te voy a extrañar" or "Me vas a hacer mucha falta". With respect to "añorar", I agree with the other comment. We would not use it referring to people.
