Can it mean mantener?
This is why I ask. I am quoting a newspaper article: La region no puede entender su economía sin las inversions de la marca alemana.

@Poli: The German firm has become an essential part of the region's economy. It depends too much on it. As Alec says, it's inconceivable to live without it. "Entender" sounds here rather used as "to imagine".
