Im wondering which form is correct? Ive always thought that the best would be "había estado muertos" in my opinion....but well, i cant explain it to myself well...so i would be greatful if someone could explain it to me well.

Although I do not remember my grammar, I know how to compose. Same thing must happens to most of you guys. And I mean most Americans, not necessarily in this board. ;->
Consider:
When he came back to the city, his wife and his children had been dead by a bomb...
Now what about
:
When he came back to the city, his wife and his children had been dead for awhile, by a bomb...
Same thing happens in spanish. :-)
Now, it sounds better your second option up there. :-)
Remember to use the English you know best, and then try to compose in spanish. Same thing goes for us foreigners...
