High end is the high priced brand. In the United States, Saks is a high -end retailer and Target is not. High end is definitely linked to expensive brand names. High-end may mean high quality but not necessarily. The emporer's new clothes may play a role. Incidentally what is the term for the emporer's new clothes in Spanish?

@Poli:The tale is called "La ropa nueva/el traje nuevo del emperador". But I'm not sure about the way we would use it related to the kind of objects Pablo talks about.

It is related in that some high-end items are the same or less good than standard products. The emperor's new clothes is a story about hype. The hapless emperor was hyped into thinking he was wearing something special when in fact he was wearing nothing. The high-end cosmetics business is famous for this.

Ah, thank you to both of you. Yes, I knew the tale... I was not sure what you meant, but being "emperor", that makes sense. (Also, sometimes some item is high-quality, but it also has a "name" or a "trademark" that makes it even 10 times more expensive than the same high-quality item, without that 'name'...) For the purposes of what I need to translate, I got the idea.

Yes, the emperor's new clothes should be taught in school. In contemporary society, it's almost as important as being aware of the golden rule. (¿la regla dorada?)

I see now. Thanks, Poli. We use that tale a little less, but I think in context it should be understood. As for the golden rule, it's "regla de oro". Some people also say "regla número uno", to mean it's the most important thing you have to learn.

Last edited by viveka; July 28, 2010 at 01:48 PM. |
